TITLE:  Mortal Instruments, City of Bones
AUTHOR: Cassandra Clare
RATING: 3.5/5

Clary Fray, (who is 15), goes to a club with her best friend Simon. She notices three other teenagers in the club, acting strangely, that then go off into the store room. Clary follows them, and watches them murder someone, but no one else can see the three teenagers. Once she gets home, her mother tells her some news, which infuriates Clary. She storms out of the house; going to a poetry reading with Simon; ignoring her mother's constant phone calls. At the poetry reading, Clary sees Jace, (one of the teenagers in the club.) Outside, he explains about demon-hunters, (he is one of them), and how in the club that they killed a demon in human form. Jace was with Isabelle and Alec in the club, (some fellow demon hunters his age.) He tells Clary she can't be fully human- because she can see demon hunters.

Clary receives a weird phone call from her mother, and heads back to her apartment to see what is going on. However, Jace follows Clary back to her apartment; where she defeats a demon, but is badly injured. Jace takes Clary back to the "institute," (which is where some demon/shadow hunters stay.) Clary quickly gets wrapped up into the shadow hunter world: full of demons, warlocks, and challenges to overcome. She manages to find Simon, and he accompanies Clary in the demon hunter world. What will Clary do when she finds out who Joycelyn, (her mother,) and Luke, (her mothers best friend,) really are. Jace, Isabelle and Alec tell Clary and Simon about the world they live in, and Valentine, who wants to get rid of all demons. Clary meets new people, who turn out not to be so nice near the end of the novel. She makes some shocking discoveries, and together with the other shadow hunters, they try to stop Valentines terrible plans. I can't tell you anymore, or I will give the plot away!

I rate this book 3.5/5 hoots. It did remind me slightly of Harry Potter, and I think the characters could have been developed more. But, overall, I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot in the story

  1. I read this book a few years back and I actually liked it. I thought the plot was well-paced, and the world building was okay. It just wasn't epic enough for me though. Glad you enjoyed! Great review :)

    1. Thank you! I'm hoping there will be even more action in the second book than the first. :)

  2. I've heard so many mixed reviews about this series. I get the part with the undeveloped characters. :/ Hopefully it gets better as the story progresses. :)
