TITLE:  The Shock of the Fall
AUTHOR: Nathan Filer
PUBLISHER:  The Borough Press

Matthew Homes, (who is 19 years old), is a schizophrenic. He is flooded with guilt about his down syndrome brother Simon's death, which happened when they were both small children. It isn't until the end of the book that you get told what actually happened the night Simon died. He writes down all of his thoughts using a typewriter, and illustrates some pictures. Matthew has been admitted to a mental health hospital- due to his illness. I like you don't find out what Matthew's illness is until the end of a novel, it keeps you guessing and on your toes.

The story flicks between Matt's childhood to the present where he is in the hospital. It shows how his mother goes downhill after Simon's death, and his time at school where he makes a good friend called Jacob, and they have a strong bond for a long time. Then the story goes to Matthew being in his new flat, and then going to hospital. He has lots of hallucinations, (therefore making him believe his dead brother is actually alive.) Matt makes little jokes and jibes of his medical notes, and it is clear to see he still has a mind of his own.

The Shock of the Fall is quite a gripping read in some parts. It was interesting to have an insight into a persons head who has a mental illness. It kept readers reading right until the end- to find out what really happened at certain events. However; the book would sometimes get confusing; and it took a while to really understand what was going on. Also, this novel wasn't a very challenging read, so it's good if you are looking for an easy read. I rate this book 3/5 hoots- it didn't wow me as much as I thought it would.

  1. I read a book about a schizophrenic character that was just awesome! You should try it: Perfectly Damaged by E. L. Montes. The language is a little cheap but it's easy to overlook because the book is so good!

    1. Thank you for the book recommendation, I will be reading that one! :)
