'To the People' is a new feature on TeenBookHoots, where I want to write about what I've seen in my life- to help people who may be feeling a certain way.

This post is for people that think they are worthless. The people that can't help but compare themselves to others, even though they try not to- and end up feeling pretty inadequate. I imagine what I am going to talk about happens in all walks of life, but I am going to focus on my experiences of this: being in school.

I see this all the time, both in school and on social media. You see a photo on someone's Instagram account, with 40 likes on it- and various comments with something like:

'Omg, absolutely stunning.' (Insert heart eyes emoji.)

Then when you upload your own Instagram photo, you wonder why it only has 10 likes. I have realised over time, that people are fake. They want to be liked by everyone, and they want the comments and likes to appear in control of others, to ensure their 'popularity-' even if these comments aren't true. What people don't realise is that many try to be in competition with each other, and they will say things that they don't think are actually true: just so they can become better than everyone else. People try to better themselves because they have no confidence in themselves, so they seek approval from others.

If you feel like you aren't worth anything, just remember one thing: that actually, you are separating yourself from the false idea of being 'popular,' You are being true to yourself, and saying what you think- rather than contributing to the fickleness of the people around you.

Have you ever had a similar feeling?

  1. You're certainly right that popularity can't define worth. And it's important to realize that even those "popular" people have insecurities and probably feel worthless at times too. Any time you build your self-worth about what other people have to say about you, you're setting yourself up for a fall. You have shared wise words here, Georgia May!
