TITLE: Billy and Me
AUTHOR: Giovanna Fletcher
PUBLISHER:  Penguin Books
RATING:  5/5

Sophie May has a secret.

One that she’s successfully kept for years. It’s meant that she’s had to give up her dreams of going to university and travelling the world to stay in her little village, living with her mum and working in the local teashop.

But then she meets the gorgeous Billy – an actor with ambitions to make it to the top. And when they fall in love, Sophie is whisked away from the comfort of her life into Billy’s glamorous – but ruthless – world.

Their relationship throws Sophie right into the spotlight after years of shying away from attention. Can she handle the constant scrutiny that
comes with being with Billy? And most of all, is she ready for her secret
heartbreak to be discovered and shared with the nation?

Sophie May has lived a comfortable life in Rosefront Hill, staying in the safe places of her home with her Mum and working in the local tea shop. But when an unexpected visitor shows up at the tea shop, with his eye on Sophie- how will she cope with these encounters she has never had to experience before? She gets pulled into the world of showbiz with her newly found actor beau, Billy Buskin. Will the brutal world eat her up and swallow her whole? Especially when she has something to hide...

'Billy and Me' is a lovely, easy summer read. It is written simply, but with a raw and real voice that many can relate to. I liked Sophie May, as there are definitely aspects of her that I can mirror myself to. Readers can become so attached to her, that you want to help her when she makes decisions that you might not have agreed with.

It was nice to see her and Billy's relationship blossom, even if it was a little bit typical. I also liked how the setting of the book flitted between places, making it more exciting and making you wonder what adventures lie ahead for Sophie and Billy- who made great protagonists as they are so likeable. I loved Molly, who owned the tea shop in the novel- and really made a big impact on Sophie's life in a very positive way. It made me want my own Molly in my life! Sophie's flashback passages were presented very well, as sometimes they don't make sense if books include them, whereas they were crystal clear in this one.

The plot was quite slow in places for me; I would have liked more twists and turns- keeping me on the edge of my seat. Parts of the novel were very predictable: but that was quite nice in a way. 'Billy and Me' felt like a reading break for me, it was great to read as other books I read are always giving me the shock factor. This novel is a definite 3/5: slightly predictable but very pleasant. I would be interested at reading the sequel: to see what Sophie and Billy get up to next.
